Closed Captioning of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Part II

One of the biggest movies of the summer is the final installment of the Harry Potter series. Who doesn’t want to see this blockbuster hit? However, what may not come to mind is that many deaf and hard of hearing people who rely on closed captioning and subtitles to watch movies sometimes have to wait until the movies are released on DVD in order to enjoy them.

The Watts Theater in Osage, Iowa decided to make a difference in their community. Mark Walk, theater owner, said this was a first for theaters in Iowa and southern Minnesota. There is a family in Osage that likes to come to every new movie. “They have a hearing- impaired son so I called them up and told them I could show the movie in closed captioning for him and they loved the idea,” said Walk. If more moviegoers like the closed captioning feature, Walk plans to show other new movies with closed captioning one night per week.

We applaud Walk and his plan to provide accessibility to all members of his community. Let’s hope more movie theaters follow suit!
